How to Get a Sri Lankan Passport

Verified · 4 Nov 2026Partly online

Get a digital photo taken at a studio authorised by the Department of Immigration and Emigration, fill in form K 35 A, and take it in person with your original birth certificate, NIC and photocopies to the Head Office in Battaramulla or a regional office, where your fingerprints are taken. The normal service costs Rs. 10,000 and takes 30 working days; the one-day service costs Rs. 20,000. Regional offices need an online appointment. A first passport cannot be applied for online, because the online system needs a valid existing passport. Adult passports are valid for 10 years.

Common problems

The office would not accept my printed photo.
Printed photos are not accepted. Go to a studio authorised by the Department; it sends the photo online and gives you an acknowledgement for your application.
My name on my NIC is different after marriage.
Bring your marriage certificate and a photocopy to confirm the name.
One or both parents of a child are abroad.
The parents' consent letter and passport copies must be certified by the Sri Lankan mission in their country. If both are abroad, their authorisation letter for the legal guardian must also be certified by the mission.
My passport is delayed.
Call the Department's line for passport delays on 011 2777634.
I need a visa for Finland and the name in my passport was altered.
The Embassy of Finland cannot accept a passport with a name alteration on the second page, so you must submit a new passport with the correct name. A name written on the second page only because it is too long for the first page is accepted.
Someone offers to get a passport faster for a fee.
Do not pay. The only faster route is the Department's own one-day service at Rs. 20,000.

Rs. 10,000 for the normal service and Rs. 20,000 for the one-day service. Online, the urgent service is Rs. 15,000. A child's 3-year passport is Rs. 3,000 (normal) or Rs. 9,000 (urgent).

Can I apply for a passport online?
Not for a first passport, because the online system needs a valid existing passport. If you have one, live in Sri Lanka and are above 15, you can submit your application and pay online, then give your fingerprints and signature at the Head Office, a regional office or a DS-DRP unit.
How long is a Sri Lankan passport valid?
10 years for adults. For children under 16, parents can choose 3 or 10 years. Emergency Certificates are valid for 2 years and can be extended for a further 2 years.
What types of passports are there?
Ordinary, diplomatic and official passports are valid for all countries. Emergency Certificates are for Buddhist pilgrims travelling to India and Nepal. If your passport is lost, stolen or expires abroad, Sri Lankan missions can issue an NMRP or Temporary Travel Document, valid only for one-way travel to Sri Lanka.
Who can get a diplomatic or official passport?
Diplomatic passports are for VVIPs, Members of Parliament and people posted to prescribed positions at overseas missions. Official passports are for Members of Provincial Councils, Mayors, Chairpersons of Local Government Bodies, Officers of All Island Services and identified staff of Members of Parliament. The fees are the same as an ordinary passport. Bring a request letter from Parliament, the Ministry of External Affairs, or your line ministry, Department or Provincial Council, and apply at the Head Office.
Can my child travel on my passport?
No. Children can no longer be included in a parent's passport and need their own.
